The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking public input for a portion of U.S. 41 (Franklin Turnpike).
The targeted area lies between Orphanage Road and north of Hunting Hills Road in Pittsylvania County.
VDOT is studying the safety and operational issues that have been identified along that portion of Franklin Turnpike, with a focus on adding safety improvements and enhanced bicycle, pedestrian and transit access. The recommendations resulting from this study may be developed for SMART SCALE and other funding mechanisms.
The project has three phases, with the first and second including the public survey. During the first half of 2024, VDOT will develop and refine preferred alternatives and prepare cost estimates.
The survey will be available through September 21. To take the survey, click here.

I don’t see any need for traffic lights added along Rte 41. I’ve never had to wait to pull out onto 41 any longer that what a stop light would hold me up at times when there is no traffic. What I see a need for is street lights at the corner of streets that connect to 41. Also a need for improved and widened sidewalks rather that the narrow debris covered walks that were installed. They are a joke. And they should be connected to the cub instead of a foot wide strip of weeds that grow there now, depositing trash into the storm drains.
