The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors approved the advertisement for public hearings for the Fiscal Year 2025 budget, which is based on a proposed 59-cent real estate tax rate.
The advertisement was approved during a special meeting on Tuesday, March 12, and will appear in the March 20 issue of the Chatham Star-Tribune.
There will be three public hearings – one for the Fiscal Year 2025 Schools budget, one for the Fiscal Year 2025 full County budget and one for the 59-cent real estate tax rate. The public hearings will be held Thursday, March 28, 7 p.m. at 39 Bank St. in Chatham.
The proposed $.59 cent tax rate reflects the recent 2024 reassessment, where residential property values went up an average of 48% county-wide. Currently, the tax rate is $.62 cents, and it has not changed in six years.
“Without any tax increases over the last six years, some of the reassessment increase must now be used to pay for our vital services to the community, including fire and rescue, the Sheriff and schools,” said Pittsylvania County Administrator Stuart Turille.
Turille continued, “The proposed 59 cent tax rate allows us to catch up to the six years of increased costs, with the majority of funds used to strengthen public safety by keeping our folks safe in their homes with fire and rescue and the Sheriff, while maintaining the upward academic excellence in our Schools, which rank in the top 12% in the state in some categories.”
Following the public hearings, the Board will meet on Thursday, April 4, 5 p.m. to approve the budget and the tax rate for Fiscal Year 2025.
