At the January 2, 2024 meeting, the Board approved funding that will empower Rockingham County Schools (RCS) to embark on a transformative journey over the next four years.
This significant funding will be allocated towards a comprehensive range of projects, reinforcing the commitment to provide an enriched learning environment for students. The approved funds will support essential upgrades in accessibility, athletic facilities, infrastructure and safety and security measures across various RCS campuses.
Chairman to the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners, Charlie Hall, explained the unanimous vote in their January meeting saying in part, “Students are our future. We must invest in them now to ensure not only they succeed in the classroom but in hopes they are proud to be from Rockingham County and will one day return to live and grow here as well.”
The approval of the funding marks the culmination of a collaborative effort between County government and the school district. This partnership underscores the shared vision of enhancing educational facilities and creating an atmosphere conducive to academic excellence. “We are excited to see the updates this money will bring to our schools over the coming years.” County Manager Lance Metzler said, “The expectation has been set with the passing of this funding and we anticipate our school buildings to be safe and more accessible for our students and staff.”
Projects listed range from internal modifications like intercom and fire alarm upgrades, added entry-way safety vestibules and elevator renovations to external enhancements like roof and HVAC replacements, outside lighting improvements and recreational area refurbishments.
RCS Superintendent Dr. Shawn Stover expressed gratitude for the community’s support and highlighted the positive impact these upgrades will have on education. “We are grateful for the support of the County Commissioners and the county government. The cooperation and coordination that enabled us to address our long-standing building needs provides a roadmap for us to follow as we tackle others challenges. The environment in which our students learn matters. This joint investment ensures our school system is well positioned to continue providing a high-quality education that prepares students for success.”
The approved funding is a testament to the dedication of both the county government and the Rockingham County School District in shaping a brighter future for the community. As these projects unfold, they will not only enhance the educational experience but also contribute to the overall well-being and prosperity of Rockingham County.
