“Time caught up to me.” – Mrs. Wanda Wilson retires after 45 professional years served with Rockingham County Government.
Wentworth, NC: Rockingham County would like to announce the retirement of Mrs. Wanda Wilson, who has spent her entire professional career with us. Wanda will work her last day as a Rockingham County employee on January 31, 2024 after 45 years in our Department of Social Services.
Mrs. Wanda D. Wilson comes from a large family and grew up on a farm in Ruffin, North Carolina. She graduated from Ruffin High School in 1972 before receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Winston Salem State University in 1976. Wanda was a substitute teacher for a few months before starting her professional career with Rockingham County.
Beginning in February of 1977, Wanda was hired as a part of the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) where she learned the key steps in different social services roles. She became a full time Rockingham County employee in 1978 where she would work in various positions including family services and crisis services until she landed in the Prevention Unit and officially began her Social Work career. In 2001, Wanda became a Supervisor for Child Protective Services and has stayed there ever since.
“My desire is to help children and their families,” Mrs. Wilson said when asked why she hasn’t changed roles, “and in our unit, we are like family. We all work so closely together, it would be hard for me to move on from my family.”
With 45 years within Rockingham County Government, Wanda’s retirement makes her one of the longest working employees this agency has seen. When asked ‘why now’ her answer was simple. “Time caught up to me, I guess. I’ve always worked and when you love your job, it’s not really work.”
Wanda says she is looking forward to retirement, now that it’s here. She says she plans to continue supporting her community through volunteer work, a characteristic she learned from her mother who recently passed. She plans to enjoy with down time with her husband of more than 20 years and stay connected to her ‘work family’.
Please join us in celebrating the work of Mrs. Wanda Wilson during her 45 years of service here in Rockingham County.
